In a recent survey, Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton was statistically tied with Democratic rival Wendy Davis while Texas Gov Greg Abbott held a mid-single-digit lead over Davis.
According to a poll conducted by the Dallas Morning News and the University of Texas at Tyler, Abbott has a seven-point lead over Beto O’Rourke, the former El Paso congressman aiming to deny the incumbent a third term. While Abbott scored good scores for the economy, his attitude toward firearms was less popular with voters, and a majority of respondents felt Texas is heading in the wrong direction.

The margin of error for the survey shows that Paxton, who is under investigation by the FBI over claims of corruption in his office and has been indicted for securities fraud, leads Democratic rival Rochelle Garza by only two points. Paxton has denied doing anything illegal.
O’Rourke has attacked Abbott over the deadly electrical grid meltdown last year and the Uvalde school shooting in an effort to win over suburban moderates who could be crucial to his victory. The Lone Star State is still a Republican stronghold, though, as no Democrat has won statewide office there since 1994.
Other significant poll results also included:
Abbott should convene a special legislative session on gun control, according to two-thirds of voters, 75% fully support increasing the legal age to buy a semi-automatic assault rifle to 21. Compared to O’Rourke’s 39% support, Abbott got 46%. O’Rourke was praised for “bringing the community together,” but Abbott was regarded as being superior at lowering crime, controlling the boundary, managing the electrical system, and boosting the economy.
The survey of 1,384 eligible voters was performed from August 1 to 7, with an error margin of 2.8 percentage points.
