Production on James Cameron’s Avatar 2 has been over, and here’s everything you need to know about the sequel, including its release date and what’s been revealed thus far about its overall story. Cameron broke his box office record with 2009’s Avatar, which surpassed Titanic as the highest-grossing film of all time, grossing over $2.7 billion worldwide and maintaining the title until 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. With many Avatar sequels in the pipeline, the director is keen to top it once more.
The human threat was overcome, and Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) was permanently transferred into his avatar body, letting him remain on Pandora with Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) and the other Navi. It provided the film with a happy ending and brought Jake and Neytiri’s arcs to a close, but Cameron’s world-building ensured that there were always more story possibilities for future films based on Pandora and its planet.
Avatar 2 will be released (Along With 3 Other Sequels)
Cameron is hard at work on four sequels. Avatar 2 wrapped filming in September 2020, and the sequel will be followed by Avatar 3, which was shot concurrently with Avatar 2. While plans may change slightly if the films aren’t a big success, Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 are already in the works. Depending on how things turn out, the final two Avatar sequels could be postponed.

The Release Date of Avatar 2
The Avatar sequels have been pushed back several times, with Avatar 2 originally scheduled for a 2014 release before being pushed back to allow for the development of the other sequels, new technology, and, of course, coronavirus-related schedule rescheduling. The release date of Avatar 2 is set for December 16, 2022, as of this writing. It will be followed by Avatar 3 on December 20, 2024, Avatar 4 on December 18, 2026, and Avatar 5 on December 22, 2028, giving the franchise a firm grip on the Christmas market for the next decade.

The cast of Avatar 2
The majority of the original Avatar cast will return in Avatar 2, led by Sam Worthington’s Jake and Zoe Saldana’s Neytiri, with CCH Pounder reprising her role as Neytiri’s mother, Mo’rat. On the human side, Giovanni Ribisi will return as Parker Selfridge, and Joel David Moore will reprise his role as Dr. Norm Spellman. Sigourney Weaver and Stephen Lang are two of the most intriguing returning actors. Weaver has confirmed her return, but she has stated that she will play a different character than Dr. Grace Augustine, with set photos implying she may be a Navi. Meanwhile, despite dying in the first film, Lang’s Colonel Miles Quaritch will return, though how exactly remains to be seen?
The Avatar 2 Story
Although the story of Avatar 2 is still being kept under wraps, some elements of the plot have already emerged. Avatar 2 will take place several years after the events of Avatar, following Jake and Neytiri as they establish a family, which will be a recurring theme in the sequels. Jake and Neytiri will be revealed to have had three Navi children since the last time viewers saw them in Avatar 2, Neteyam (Jamie Flatters), Lo’ak (Britain Dalton), and Tuktirey (Trinity Bliss). Interestingly, their fourth child, an adopted son named Miles (played by Jack Champion) is a human who was taken in by Jake. The addition of Spider will cause some strain in the family dynamics, which will be exacerbated by Neytiri’s dislike and distrust of humans and what they stand for.
When Jake and Neytiri’s home is threatened again, they’ll be forced to abandon it to explore much more of Pandora than before, thanks in part to the new underwater mo-cap technology Cameron developed for Avatar 2. This means that the sequel will explore the depths of the world’s oceans as well as its land. With Lang’s Quaritch back, he’ll most likely serve as the main antagonist for Jake and Neytiri to deal with as they try to protect their family from the threat he poses.
