Plex announces a data breach, with the company emailing users that they should change their passwords after a data breach exposes users’ personal data.
Plex discloses a data breach, with the firm emailing users to advise them to change their passwords following a data breach that exposed users’ personal information.
Plex has millions of users worldwide, and the firm stated in an email to consumers that they identified unusual behavior in one of its databases.
The business launched an inquiry into the event and discovered that someone had gained access to some of their data. Plex said that this data contains users’ emails, usernames, and encrypted passwords; nevertheless, Plex claims that the account passwords “were hashed and protected in accordance with best standards, and out of an excess of caution, we are asking all Plex accounts to have their passwords changed.”

Plex assures consumers that their credit card and other payment information are not stored on their systems and were “not susceptible in this incident.” To address the problem at hand – how the hacker gained access to Plex’s servers – the firm is now forcing all of its users to reset their passwords immediately, and they are combing through all of their security systems and hardening them further to prevent repeat accidents.
In an email to subscribers, Plex stated: “We found unusual behavior on one of our databases yesterday. We launched an investigation very away, and it appears that a third party was able to obtain a small portion of data, including emails, usernames, and encrypted passwords. Despite the fact that all account credentials that may have been obtained were hashed and protected in line with best standards, we are asking all Plex accounts to have their passwords changed out of caution. Rest assured that credit card and other payment information is not kept on our systems and was not compromised in this incident.”

“To cut a long tale short, we respectfully suggest that you reset your Plex account password as soon as possible. There is a checkbox to “Sign out linked devices after password change” when doing so. This will also sign out all of your devices (including any Plex Media Servers you possess) and prompt you to login in with your new password. This is a pain, but it is necessary for improved security. We’ve written a support page with step-by-step instructions on how to reset your password, which you can find here “.
