But all of a sudden, pictures of Biden as a weak senior citizen sitting on top of a terribly run White House have been replaced by pictures of an excellent leader smiling behind aviator sunglasses, whose team has successfully accomplished a number of national objectives. That’s what an unbeaten run does for you.
It did not happen as a result of a strategy shift or a staff shakeup, though at times allies urged him to take those customary actions. it’s been a combination of good fortune, intelligence, and persistence by a president and Democratic Party determined to act alone where Republicans would not and find agreements where Republicans would.

Gas prices, which had a negative impact on Joe Biden when they rose, have been falling for two months. Neither movement was caused by the President. However, the turn of events has removed some of the higher inflation that remains his single most serious political concern.
Weather conditions allowed a CIA drone to kill al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri on the balcony of his Kabul home late last month. This same precision strike, which also began planning this spring, validated Joe Biden’s claims that the US could fight terrorism in Afghanistan with or without the presence of troops.
Joe Biden has proven his critics incorrect in both ways in Congress. Before the end of the play, politicians and pundits describing a failed legislative agenda had written their reviews.

Progressive lawmakers who dismissed the former senator’s talk of collaborating with Republicans have seen Congress make bipartisan investments in infrastructure, domestic semiconductor manufacturing, and veterans’ health care. They were part of a critical mass of Republicans who supported them.
Others who argued that Joe Biden had drifted too far left have watched Congress take the largest-ever federal steps to combat climate change. There was not a single Republican who voted yes. Every Democrat did it.
This does not make Joe Biden a modern-day FDR or LBJ. He cannot lay claim to a unique legacy to match Social Security, Medicare, or especially the Affordable Care Act, though he has enhanced it.
Announced expenditures to increase economic opportunity through child care, child tax credits, paid holidays, and compulsory pre-kindergarten have all flopped. The bipartisan gun-control legislation that ended years of congressional gridlock did not include his request to ban assault weapons. He has also not been successful in implementing legislation to protect voting rights at a time when Republican extremism is harming democracy and the rule of law.
The fundamental limitation has been imposed by partisan math. Democrats need only a few defections in the House and none in the Senate to act alone on the small number of high-priority measures that are not subject to a Republican filibuster. The climatic change package was only successful because Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia finally promised to work with his colleagues after months of resistance.
That regulatory balance beam makes what Joe Biden, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer have accomplished all the more remarkable. Calling them “wins” on the political scoreboard, as if governance were a sporting event, obscures their impact on American life.
The 2021 connectivity regulation, which eluded Joe Biden’s two immediate predecessors, means $550 billion in new federal investments in roads, bridges, airports, public transit, railroads, rural broadband, clean water, and electric-vehicle charging stations, among other things.
The semiconductor proposal provides more than $52 billion in funding to encourage domestic manufacturing of critical components for products ranging from automobiles to computer systems, reducing America’s dependence on foreign vendors.
The “burn pits” bill provides new health care and disability benefits to millions of veterans who were revealed to be toxicants while serving.
The Inflation Reduction Act – named to lure Manchin though it will have a negligible impact on inflation this year – means Medicare beneficiaries will pay no more than $35 per month for insulin and no more than $2,000 per year in out-of-pocket drug costs. For the first time, Medicare can use its market power to negotiate lower prices from drug companies.

The IRA also commits $370 billion to clean renewable energy development and tackling climate change, that also analysts estimate will help the US reduce carbon emissions by 40% below 2005 levels by 2030. It maintains American leadership at a time when extreme weather events highlight the world’s threats in stark relief.
Joe Biden’s shaky public persona has begun to improve. Democrats in the 2022 election have gained ground as a result of the conservative Supreme Court’s decision to end the constitutional right to abortion.
But this doesn’t mean voters will reward them in the upcoming midterm elections. Republicans need only a four-seat net gain to retake control of the House, which is well below the historical average for the party that does not control the White House.
It also does not imply that Joe Biden would then follow in the footsteps of Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, and Ronald Reagan in overcoming early downfalls to secure a second term. At 79, Joe Biden appears to be the oldest president in American history, as restless younger Democrats seek new leadership.
But it does mean that the President and his party have taken advantage of the opportunity that regulation of the authorities has provided them over the last two years. They have accomplished much of what they sought public office to accomplish.
