Liz Truss’s Political career and it’s end.
Liz Truss’ short political career ended this week, and it’s impossible not to write something hilarious about Brexit, the dangerous political asteroid that is Brexit.
Truss’ departure reflects the Tory party’s hatred of Europe and inability to arrest the country’s relative decline. This hatred has consumed British politics, troubled the EU, permanently damaged the UK, and likely destroyed the United States. There may come a time when the Tory party is consumed by Brexit, and this day may not be far away. Despite a newly elected prime minister, we are still not far from a general election, in which opinion polls show the Tories would lose.
Unlike George Canning (who died after 121 days in office) and Andrew Bonar Law (who resigned with illness after 211 days), Truss’ premiership will be remembered as the most unsuccessful and shortest in British history. Edgar the Thling, who ruled England from October 1066 to December 1066, lasted longer.
Lack of competence
Also, Truss will make Anthony Eden (Suez) and Lord North look like tactical geniuses.
With the current cabinet made up largely of ‘Remainers’ and the UK’s political-economic landscape in ruins, Brexit is clearly not a wise idea. Some Tory MPs still want Boris Johnson as prime minister.
After Brexit, the most ambitious, least capable politicians rose to the fore. Kate Bingham’s recent book ‘The Long Shot’ details the race to find and distribute a COVID vaccine in the UK, as well as the political machinations involved.
Brexiteers’ implosion allows many to say ‘I told you so!’, and I’m jumping on board shamelessly.
