Rishi Sunak became the UK’s first ever person of color to lead the country and the first Hindu prime minister following the implosion of Liz truss’s premiership after 44 days.
Tuesday morning, Truss met with her cabinet for the final time before submitting her resignation to king Charles III, who had been appointed to serve as prime minister by the king.
In the beginning :
A native of the Indian subcontinent, Sunak was born to Indian parents on May 12, 1980, in Southampton, England. His father’s name is Yashvir Sunak and his mother’s name is Usha Sunak. His father worked as a general practitioner in the NHS, while his mother ran a local pharmacy.
The first university where he studied was Winchester College, followed by Oxford University where he studied Politics, Philosophy, and Economics. In addition, he was also a Fulbright Scholar at Stanford University where he completed his MBA degree.
It’s a college romance, right?

During his master’s degree program at Stanford University, he also met Akshata Murty, the daughter of NR Narayana Murthy, the founder of Infosys, who was to become his future wife.
In 2009, the couple got married in Bengaluru, her hometown, where she was born and raised. Krishna and Anoushka are their two daughters and are very close to their parents.
From the financial sector to the political arena :
Previously, Sunak worked as an analyst for Goldman Sachs, one of the world’s largest investment banks. In 2006, he made the move to work for hedge funds when he joined TCI, and three years later, he left to co-found a new hedge fund with a colleague.
As early as 2010, Sunak became interested in politics and turned his attention to it.
One of the many firsts that have occurred in the past few years is this one :
As a Conservative Party candidate in 2014, Sunak was chosen as a candidate for the Yorkshire seat of Richmond, which was previously held by the former Conservative leader William Hague.

As the first British parliamentarian to take his oath on the Bhagavad Gita, he has been referred to as the “Maharajah of the Yorkshire Dales” for his dedication to the Bhagavad Gita when he took his oath as finance minister.
Taking the ladder to the top :
Sunak was appointed to serve as Parliamentary Under-Secretary by the former Prime Minister, Theresa May, during her tenure as Prime Minister.
He was appointed as a Minister in November 2017, after serving as a Parliamentary Private Secretary at the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy from June 2017 until his appointment as Minister in November 2017.
The path to becoming a leader :
It was later in 2019 that Sunak served as Treasury Chief Secretary in the Boris Johnson government during his tenure as Prime Minister. As a member of the cabinet, he is considered to be one of the most senior members, having been promoted to the position of Chancellor of the Exchequer in 2020.
The backlash against the government :
After he breached the Covid rules and organized lockdown parties at government buildings, his popularity took a hit. As a result, he had to resign from his post due to a loss of popularity.
Sunak also faced criticism for the non-domiciled status of his wife when it came to taxation. As a result of her tax status, she does not have to pay UK tax on the income she earns overseas.
Running for the post of PM :

In September 2022, Sunak ran against Liz Truss for PM following Boris Johnson’s resignation but lost the election. Thereafter, he resurfaced when Truss announced her resignation with the backing of his supporters.
As soon as Sunak became leader, he stated that his objective was to create a “highly productive UK economy”.
